To update the map, click the Refresh Map button located beneath the layers list. To enable the Auto Refresh function, check the box located beneath the Refresh Map button. Auto Refresh will automatically refresh the map view after any change is made to the layers list.
Some tools require the use of popup windows. For full functionality, please modify your browser settings to enable JavaScript and allow popups from this site.
Many tools work only on the active layer. To designate the active layer, click on the circle next to the layer name:

Metadata: Click for links to FGDC metadata for each layer.
Overview: Click to toggle the overview map on and off. Clicking inside the overview map will recenter the map on the point clicked.
Zoom In: To zoom in, click on this tool and then click on the map at the area of interest. To control the amount of zoom, click on the tool and draw a box around the area of interest.
Zoom Out: To zoom out, click on this tool and then click on the map. To control the amount of zoom, click on the tool and draw a box on the map. A smaller box will result in a larger zoom.
Full Extent: Click to zoom to the full map extent.
Zoom to Active: Click to zoom to the full extent of the active layer.
Zoom Back: Click to go back to the previous map extent.
Pan: To pan, click on this tool, click on the map, and drag the mouse in the desired direction.
Hyperlink: Click on this tool and then on a map feature from the active layer to view items that have been hyperlinked for that feature. These items will open in a popup window. At this time, the hyperlink tool is enabled only for USGS sediment core description sheets, USGS seismic reflection trackline printable profiles, and LaCoss seismic reflection trackline scanned profiles. A blank window will appear if you click on a feature for which no linked items are available.
Identify: Click on this tool and then on a map feature from the active layer to see attribute information for that feature. This information will be displayed in a popup window.
Query: Click on this tool to perform a query on the active layer. The query dialog box will open in a popup window. Select a field to query and the desired operator from the drop-down lists. Enter a value in the "Value" box or click the "Get Samples" button for a list of sample values. Click the "Add to Query String" button. To execute the query, click the "Execute" button. The results of the query will appear in a second popup window with the option to zoom to selected records, which will be highlighted in yellow. If more than 15 records are selected, there will also be an option to view the additional records. For a multi-part query, use the "And," "Or," "Not," and parentheses buttons to add to the initial query statement before executing the query. "Undo" and "Clear" buttons are available to make changes to the query statement before executing.
Find: Click on this tool to search for a text string in the active layer. The Find dialog box will open in a popup window. Enter the string to search for and click the "Find String" button. The results of the search will appear in a second popup window with the option to zoom to selected records, which will be highlighted in yellow.  If more than 15 items are found, there will also be an option to view the additional records.
Measure: Use this tool to measure distances on the map. Click on the tool, and boxes for total kilometers and segment kilometers will appear in the upper left-hand corner of the map. Click on the map at the start of the segment to be measured and wait for a red start point to appear. As you move the cursor over the map, the segment kilometers will continuously update. To end the segment, click on its endpoint and wait for a red line segment to appear. To add segments to the total, click on the next endpoint and wait for the red line segment to appear. Continue in this manner until all segments are completed. To stop using the measure tool and clear segments from the map, click on the Clear Selection tool. To stop using the measure tool but leave segments on the map, click on any other tool.
Buffer: Use this tool to identify map features based on distance from other features. Select features from the active layer by using the Query, Find, or Select by Rectangle tools. Click on the Buffer tool to open the buffer dialog box in a popup window. Specify the layer to query and the buffer distance and click the "Create Buffer" button. The buffer area will appear in gray, and features falling wholly or partially within the buffer area will be highlighted in red. A checkbox in the Buffer dialog box provides the option to display in a second popup window attribute information for those features in the buffer area. The Clear Selection tool will clear all selected features and query results.
Select by Rectangle: To select features from the active layer, click on this tool and click on a feature or draw a rectangle that includes all or part of the desired features. The selected features will be highlighted in yellow, and their attribute information will appear in a popup window. If more than one record is selected, there will also be an option to zoom to selected features. If more than 15 records are selected, there will be an option to view the additional records.
Clear Selection: Click on this tool to clear selected features and measured segments.
Print Map: Click on this tool to open the Print Map dialog box in a popup window. Enter a title for the map and click the "Create Print Page" button. A printer-friendly version of the map, overview map, and legend will open in a new browser window, from which you may use the browser's print function to send the image to your printer.
Extract Data: This tool is still being configured and may not not work properly. For copies of the data, contact B. Dwyer.
